Our 42-acre RYA recognised centre is the ideal place to learn how to sail. With variable winds, an extensive well-maintained fleet of modern dinghies, and a team of dedicated instructors learning to sail couldn’t be easier.
Try Sailing
Learning to sail for the first time is great fun and an opportunity to learn new skills. This course will provide you with a safe & fun introduction to sailing with expert tuition & some of the latest equipment. This is a mixed adult & junior course.

R.Y.A. Level 1 Start Sailing
This course is the perfect introduction to the exciting sport of sailing. Using purpose designed single handed dinghies you are sure to benefit from maximum time in charge of your boat in this hands on sport. The course introduces rigging, launch & recovery and enough basic skills to have you sailing competently in all directions by the end of course.
Logbook and handbooks are included in the cost of the course and upon successful completion an RYA certificate.

R.Y.A. Level 2 Basic Skills
Now that you have mastered Level 1 and gained the fundamentals this course aims to improve your handling skills. This course will teach you rigging, launching capsize recovery and improving the essential skills that you will have learnt in the level 1 course. Moving from single-handed dinghies to the more advanced crewed Laser Stratos or Topper Omega this course is a great step to gaining confidence on the water leaving you competent to sail in light winds.

R.Y.A. Sailing with Spinnakers
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Level 2 or equivalent
Here at Trafford Water Sports Centre it is our intention to give you the best of both worlds by letting you have a go with both asymmetrical and symmetrical spinnakers. The course will show you how to hoist gybe and drop both types.

Seamanship Skills
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Level 2 or equivalent
This course will give you the chance to build on all you have learnt in level two before introducing you to some of the more traditional seamanship skills associated with the sport of sailing. In so doing this will mean you should be able to sail the boat to its best, and as such you should feel confident at making those all important seaman like decisions. All this should make your enjoyment of the sport so much more.

R.Y.A. Performance Sailing
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Level 2 plus experience sailing in a variety of wind conditions
This course will be of interest to anyone wishing to improve their boat handling. As such the course will look at getting the best out of your boat by showing you how to tune the boat for the best results. After you have the boat set up then we move on to sailing it faster and more efficiently. But the course doesn’t stop there because now we look at spinnakers and who knows if you still want more maybe a trapeze may make for more fun.

R.Y.A. Start Racing
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Level 2 or equivalent
Most sailing clubs run races in one form or another. This course is designed to give you the confidence to have a go at this level of racing. Looking at the basics such as starting, the first leg, mark rounding, rules and the finish. By the end of the course you may not be an Olympic champion but at least you have made a start.
